Blog #1 - All about my name

Blogging Prompt: How do you feel about your name? What is the story behind your name? Do you ever wish you had a different name? If you go by a nickname, did you choose it yourself or was it chosen for you?

Your name is really important throughout your life and is widely used. Teachers at school call you by your name, your parents, your friends, and your coworkers do as well. Your name is something that sticks with you throughout your life. When I think about how I feel about my name, I would say it is something I hear every day a large amount of times but is not something I get annoyed by usually. I think my name suits me well and is a name that can be used for my whole life (baby-adult). I feel that my name sounds pretty, is pretty easy to get right unless someone says (car-uh) and is easy to remember. Sometimes I think that I would want my name to be something else but at the end of the day, I like my name because it is not everyone's name, so it is original to me and has a story behind it.

The story behind my name is that my parents wanted a baby name that had similarity to someone in the family. They wanted it to be important and not just a random name they both agreed on. My mom is very close with her mother and wanted to have a name similar to hers. She didn't want it exactly the same as her mom's name though. My grandma's name is Carol. They choose Kara because it has the same first sounds as my grandma's name which makes it sound similar. Both of my parents agreed on it. My grandma was very happy and proud that her name was the inspiration for my name and to this day she still talks about it.

When I was younger, I had a few people that I looked up to and one of their names was close to mine, so I wanted people to call me Kassie. I actually think my phone contact still has Kassie as my name. Cassie was a woman on the U of I's basketball team that I got to meet with my dad, and she was a very nice small-town girl. The nickname lasted for a bit but then I outgrew that phase and not many people called me Kassie to begin with. This isn't a nickname really but by some of my friends now I get called "shorty" because I am not as tall as some of them, even though I have high hopes of getting to 5' 4 or 5' 5. That is not a nickname I choose for myself, but it is funny!

Like I talked about above, I am content with my name and don't wish I went by a different name. I know above I talked about how I had a nick name when I was younger, but it wasn't because I disliked my name it was because I wanted to be like the lady on the basketball team. I think if my name had no meaning in the family than maybe I would want a different name. Kara is a name not heard that often and it is a really charming name. If I wanted to have a different name, it might be Julia or like Maryn, but I think I will save those names for my children down the road. Then I will say those names very often and will not even think about wanting it. I feel that names aren't really annoying even though they are said everywhere. Even though they are called so often I just think that they don't get annoying like some other words do.

The thoughts that come to my head when I think about my name represent how I really feel about my name. I think it is also because I want to express thanks to my parents for choosing my name since they had to have some hard core discussing to get it. I am honored to have my name be after my grandma so I want to do good and right to show her she can be proud as well. Kara is the name I was given, and I am thankful for it. Recently, I have heard kids being named Chicago or X Æ A-Xii which includes numbers. Those are very different and unusual names for children. Those kids may be wishing they had other names.

My name is something I am glad to have!

  1. I'm happy that you are satisfied with your name, and it's really awesome that you have that connection between your grandma and you. I really like your point talking about the nicknames you have and I guess I could see myself calling you Kassie, but that's also because I just met you properly a month ago. I think that just reinforces how much a name holds such value in our minds that it's hard to think about people we've known for awhile (seriously) as other names. I'm also glad that I clarified what your name was from the beginning, because I have definitely heard people pronounce both variations. I'm confident you will achieve your goal of 5'5"!

  2. I'm glad you like your name! I think that it's pretty cool that your name was influenced by your grandma's name and how similar the two names are. I like how you talked about your nicknames, even if they weren't ones that you came up by yourself.

  3. That's good that you like your name! I think it's cool that you are thinking about naming your children after a name you liked instead of focusing on wanting it yourself. I think your name is very original and it's cool that you were named after your grandmother! I also liked that you shared both a nickname you chose for yourself and one that your friends chose for you.

  4. I enjoyed reading about the origin of your name, and I find its derivation from the name of your grandma to be an interesting connection. I also enjoyed reading about the various nicknames you had been given in addition to your considerations when it comes to naming your future children. Well done.
